Uniport brings together the port logistics community of Bilbao at its General Assembly

The Getxo maritime cruise terminal was the setting for our June General Assembly, which was attended by representatives of the 135 associated companies. Among other authorities, we have been honoured with the presence of Ainhoa Ondarzabal, Councillor of BTI- Basque Internationalisation Agency, who has presented the internationalisation plan of the Basque Government, with special emphasis on aid to companies and support for youth training through various scholarships abroad.
This event was the closing of the 2021 financial year with the approval of the annual accounts by the General Assembly, as a review of the activities of the first half of the year and the calendar planned until the end of the year, and especially as a point of reunion for the sector after the Covid restrictions.
Business dynamism
It also allowed us to share with those present the employment dynamism of the Bilbao port community in 2021. Specifically, 60% of our companies (excluding public administrations) made nearly 1,300 new hires in 2021 (according to data provided by Lanbide), which shows the great resilience of the sector in the face of changing situations and the prevailing uncertainty at a global level.
These positive data are complemented by the value of the investments made in the last ten years in the port area, which amount to 1,230 million euros, 70% of which correspond to the private sector.
A key link for industry and trade
Finally, and in relation to the Basque Country's internationalisation plan, we were pleased to point out that 70% of Uniport's members have an international presence and more than 55% have at least one office of their own abroad. Last year, trade with 148 countries and 815 ports took place to and from the port of Bilbao, which makes our multimodal logistics cluster a key link for industry and trade.
