Port Authority of Bilbao | 203,000 m² for new logistics and industrial projects

The Port Authority has just finished urbanising most of the area of phase one of the central breakwater and can now place 203,000 square metres at the disposal of companies, to be parcelled out according to needs. This A5 quay has 1,120 metres of berthing line and occupies 362,000 square metres. Total investment in the construction of this quay amounted to 112 million euros in a project that was selected for finance by the European Commission in the 2014 “Connecting Europe Facility” fund. 

The European Commission will provide up to 20.9 million euros in the finance agreement, amounting to 20% of the eligible expenses. The rest of the investment was financed by the Port Authority through port fees and charges.Therefore, as of this month, the port of Bilbao has a new area prepared for receiving new strategic business projects, which will provide traffic and employment, both logistical and industrial.

The new A5 quay will have railway access and a new installation allowing ships to connect to the port's power grid, thus reducing greenhouse gas emissions and noise while they are moored and improving the environmental footprint of their stay in Bilbao. 

This is known as “Onshore Power Supply”, and it will also enable moored ships to reduce vibrations and engine wear on board. The OPS (Onshore Power Supply) project initiated by the Port Authority will entail the electrification of several quays in the port of Bilbao, and it is a decisive move towards environmental sustainability by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and noise.

With the conviction that the results of the BilbOPS project will lead to improved infrastructures and logistic processes in the port and the surrounding area, Uniport, and a significant number of companies in the port community, have adhered to the manifesto of support for its implementation.

The Trans-European Transport Networks, or TEN-T, is a planned collection of priority transport networks designed to facilitate the transport of people and goods throughout the European Union, in which the port of  Bilbao is classified as a "core port".
