Brittany Ferries reactivates the Bilbao - Portsmouth service with the new vessel "Salamanca", its first Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) powered ferry

March 29th 2022

The vessel "Salamanca" arrived at the port of Bilbao, from Portsmouth at 7.00 h. on its first voyage with passengers and cargo. On this occasion, its return to Portsmouth was at 18.00 h. with a sailing time of 28 hours.
The new Brittany Ferries vessel, which replaces its predecessor on this route since 2011, the "Cap Finnesterre", will connect Bilbao with Portsmouth twice a week (Tuesday and Saturday) and once a week with the French port of Cherbourg.

The "Salamanca" is an E-Flexer class vessel, 214.5 metres long and 27.8 metres wide, offering 2.7 linear kilometres for vehicles (150 lorries combined with light vehicles). It has 341 cabins distributed over ten decks, where it can accommodate up to 1,015 passengers, 22 of them adapted for travelling with pets and with a crew of 85 professionals.

The "Salamanca" ferry is propelled by LNG, the most efficient option today for reducing the environmental impact of maritime transport by producing almost zero sulphur oxide emissions. This is in addition to a more hydrodynamic design that incorporates multiple technological innovations that have made it possible to reduce the number of engines to two instead of the four used in equivalent vessels, with the consequent energy savings.
An excellent vessel for an excellent voyage.
