BAHÍA DE BIZKAIA GAS (BBG) | Important milestones

In 2021, Bahía de Bizkaia Gas (BBG), the regasification plant located in the port of Bilbao, received 41 ships with just over 3.2 million tons of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), equivalent to 46,103 gigawatt/hour, amounting to 11.1% of all the LNG imported into Spain and 20.4% of that entering via ports.

As an important milestone, last December, it received six LNG tankers, three of which were unloaded in less than 72 hours, thanks to the high operational capacity of their installations.

BBG is one of the most interesting options for European gas companies, due to the port of Bilbao’s strategic location and its operational capacity and versatility, contributing to reinforcing the Spanish gas system, guaranteeing natural gas supply to the whole of the Iberian peninsula through gas pipelines as well as tankers. Last year, the truck loading installations attended to 3,091 tankers, a service that enables the capillary distribution of LNG, for example, to the agricultural sector.

All the above makes their docking, storage and regasification installations a benchmark for the gas sector. If the trend is maintained in April, with a 40% increase over the same month last year, 2022 is expected to be a good operational year, although conditioned by the international energy sector situation and the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the resulting measures adopted by the European Union.
