CSP IBERIAN BILBAO TERMINAL | The first hybrid RTGs in Europe arrive in Bilbao

Sept.-Oct. 2022 | Puerto de Bilbao NEWS 98

The first hybrid RTGs in Europe arrive in Bilbao at CSP Iberian Bilbao Terminal.

The port operator CSP Spain has purchased eleven hybrid RTG cranes made by the Finnish manufacturer  Konecranes. These are the first hybrid RTG cranes to be used in Europe, and six of them will be installed in the maritime terminal of Bilbao.

The new machinery was purchased in July 2022 and cost 12 million euros. An investment confirming the company's commitment at all levels; improved productivity, reduction of environmental impact and a commitment to new technology, improved operability and increased security of operations.

The new gantry cranes on tyres will be fully operational from the end of October 2023. This type of hybrid RTG (Rubber Tired Gantry) is characterised by its energy efficiency compared to conventional RTGs. In terms of safety and ergonomics, they have state-of-the-art systems such as laser anti-collision, anti-lifting of trucks and trailers and remote monitoring systems. They also have auto-guiding with GPS positioning, guaranteeing greater comfort for the handler.

The benefits of hybrid port cranes are significant. As well as using batteries, they are outstanding for reduction in fuel consumption (-50%), operational costs, greenhouse gas emissions and acoustic pollution.

This incorporation of new machinery in the Bilbao marine terminal is a commitment to progress and continuous improvement in the energy efficiency strategy and environmental protection that CSP Spain implements in all their business units.
